OVERVIEW

WESSEX

13th to 22nd September 2027

Following the success of 2025’s two Northumbria tours, themed on the history and culture of that ancient Anglo-Saxon kingdom, AWT’s tour for 2027 is Wessex. Based in the beautiful counties of Hampshire and Dorset, a region of great historical, legendary and literary interest, and in particular in the lovely New Forest, we will be exploring the history and culture of Wessex, which became the dominant Anglo-Saxon kingdom and evolved into the kingdom of England itself. As well as leading visits to its capital, Winchester, and a wide range of sites in Hampshire and Dorset, our historians will be focusing on historical mysteries, and the mythology and literary highlights of the region.

We will be staying for 9 nights at Rhinefield House (AA 4 Red Star, Inspector's Choice)

Known locally as the 'Jewel in the Forest', Rhinefield House is an award-winning luxury hotel steeped in natural beauty and hidden deep within the New Forest National Park. With a long history, it boasts a stunning blend of Tudor and Gothic architecture, Rhinefield House is a haven of luxury and tranquillity, offering an idyllic escape for those seeking refined relaxation and world-class dining. Its luxurious rooms are designed for comfort and relaxation. Each is beautifully appointed, combining period features with modern amenities, ensuring a perfect balance of historic charm and contemporary convenience.
The hotel’s award-winning restaurant, The Armada, offers a fine-dining experience featuring a menu inspired by local New Forest ingredients. From seasonal game dishes to fresh seafood and carefully curated vegetarian options, each dish is a celebration of the region’s rich natural larder. For a more relaxed meal, The Conservatory offers light bites, afternoon tea, and casual dining options in a bright, airy setting. Overlooking the hotel’s ornamental ponds and stunning gardens, it’s the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch or afternoon tea. In warmer weather, guests can also enjoy alfresco dining on the terrace, taking in the peaceful surroundings as they savour delicious cuisine.
Rhinefield House Hotel’s spa offers a range of indulgent treatments - from massages and facials to body wraps and beauty therapies - delivered with premium skincare products. The seasonal outdoor swimming pool, treatment rooms and well-equipped gym are open to guests.
